In 2019, one woman was tired of waiting on Elon, so she made her own.
Simone Giertz, a.k.a. “The Queen of Shitty Robots,” an inventor and YouTuber, didn’t want to wait for Tesla to produce its electric pickup, so she built one herself. She chopped up a Model 3 and made it into the “world’s first functional Tesla” electric pickup.
“I got tired of waiting for Tesla to release their pickup truck, so I cut up my Model 3 and made my own,” said Giertz on Instagram. She calls her new wheels “Truckla” and fitted it with a personalized California black plate to match.
According to Wired and many of her videos chronicling her ongoing health battle, Giertz had been preparing to build a Tesla pickup with artist/mechanic Marcos Ramirez for more than a year, but a noncancerous brain tumor she previously experienced returned and scuttled the project for several months. She continued to publish videos and describe her goals while battling the tumor, eventually ordering a base model Tesla 3. A half-hour summary of the build can be found here:
The video goes over her online Model 3 order, delivery, and construction technique. Giertz rented a garage for 12 days of conversion work, first keying “Truckla” onto the EV’s trunk lid to avoid turning back. On the second day, the crew removes the rear window, strips the interior, and Giertz cuts into the Model 3’s structure. Later, the team installed support beams, a roll bar, a used Ford F-150 bed, a roof rack, a GMC Canyon rear window, an LED light rack, and other features.
Truckla is already usable, but will be fully drivable and finished in July once it receives more waterproofing for the battery pack, a bed liner, final interior and body work, and paint, according to Giertz. She also wants to install a lift kit, which we wholeheartedly endorse.
